What causes paint overspray?

Activation causes excessive spraying when no part is present or when paint comes off the part. This can occur when the part is too far away or when the application angle is incorrect, often due to programming errors. This is because air pressure and spray pattern are two of the most common causes of over-spraying. Excessive spraying is caused by the haze created by spray-painting a surface.

The tiny paint particles are light enough to float in the air; when they land, they start to harden slowly and get sprayed excessively. Excess aerosol can be safely removed in many cases. The wrong size of the tip, the dirty state of the tool, the inadequate distance between the surface and the sprayer, and the pressure of the gun are some of the few common reasons that cause excessive spray. Apart from that, the presence and direction of the wind and the angle of the spray gun also increase and reduce excess spraying.

On the back of the paint can, you'll also find the manufacturer's recommended tip hole size for the type of sprayer you're using, but try to use a smaller tip than recommended on the label. If you're not familiar, over-spraying is the term used when using more paint than is needed to cover a specific surface. When dried, haze paint dries much faster and turns to dust before it adheres to anything, but when there is high humidity, airborne paint particles stay moist longer. Paint droplets from exterior paint and excess paint, especially if it's oil-based, are difficult to remove without causing further damage to the surface to which it adheres.

The paint is pressed through a nozzle that atomizes the liquid paint into a very fine mist of tiny paint droplets. For this reason, you can opt for an airless paint sprayer or even a low volume, low pressure sprayer (HVLP), which uses low pressure and a thin layer of paint to ensure you get the job done quickly and without spraying too much. This can make it harder to do the job cleanly and efficiently, as you'll inevitably waste more paint trying to cover the target area. If you find that your window or door paint job is over-sprayed, the cause could be as simple as excessive air pressure. When a painter needs to spray paint a surface, they need to configure their equipment to work with the paint they are using. The wind pushes airborne paint away from the spray area, increasing the risk of excessive damage.

If you have to paint outside when it's windy, carefully mask the spray area and use the correct sized spray tip to avoid problems. For this reason, correcting excess spray could be as simple as getting a smaller nozzle for the paint gun.
